Marquetry Information
We handcraft all our marquetry panels in-house, here in the UK. We do not use CNC machinery, but instead follow antique and traditional woodworking methods including cutting by fretsaw machine and sand shading to achieve the finest details.
Our marquetry panels include, but are not limited to bespoke marquetry, chessboards, draughts boards and backgammon boards. Our board game marquetry layons are made with 2 inch crossbanding in contrasting colours. Take a look at some of our Bespoke Marquetry here.
If our marquetry panels do not match your needs, contact us for bespoke, one-off marquetry to your design and add a special element to your project!
Wood Species & Colours
Our made-to-order marquetry panels and motifs are made using contrasting wood veneers, parts of which are sand shaded to add depth. Backgrounds are available in walnut, rosewood or mahogany.
Whereas our made-to-order marquetry shells and fans reflect an antique style of c. 1780. They are made using natural boxwood or maple, parts of which are also sand shaded to add depth. Then, finished off with a light wood, fine line. Backgrounds are available in green coloured wood veneer.
Please contact us if you have particular requirements for the background.
Size
Marquetry panels are delicate as they are often made with 0.6mm thick wood veneers. They are composed of multiple pieces, held together with veneer tape.
Generally, the size of the panels depends on the shape, as noted below and within the product description. Please note, that as marquetry is handcrafted and particularly with very small-scale designs, a small tolerance for sizes must be accepted.
Square & Rectangle
The size indicates the marquetry itself. The panel is supplied with a minimum of 10mm extra background surrounding the marquetry. This is so it can be easily placed into your veneer assembly with the help of inlay bandings.
Round & Oval
The size indicates the marquetry and up to the outer edges of the surrounding fine line. It is often supplied with an extra outer background to protect the fine line. Before placing the panel into your veneer assembly, the outer background can be used, or carefully removed with a knife or scissors.
Quadrant & Corner
The size indicates the straight edges of the panel, up to the outer edges of the fine line. It is often supplied with an extra outer background to protect the fine line. Before placing the panel into your veneer assembly, the outer background can be used, or carefully removed with a knife or scissors.
Storage & Gluing
Storage
Please store the panels in a cool (around 10°C), dry place. Keep flat and (if possible) under a weight/press or in clamps until ready for use.
